Chemical Reaction

Have you ever thought about why we handle relationships and feelings the way we do? Why does it have to be so secret who we are attracted to? Why can't we just say "Hey, I can't help but notice I'm pretty attracted to you." and then if the other person doesn't feel the same they just say, very casually, "Oh, really? I'm totally flattered, but I don't feel that way about you. Thanks though!" What's the use of hurt feelings? People can't help not being attracted the same way people can't help being attracted. No one really knows what draws two people together, so why do we treat crushes as some sort of disease?

Then let's say the scenario is reversed. Person #1 tells Person #2 that they wouldn't mind being closer to them and Person #2 does indeed requite the feelings. Can it stay understated and not be overblown? "Hey, I can't help but notice I'm pretty attracted to you." Instead of saying: "OMG, REALLY? I'VE LOVED YOU SINCE THE DAY I MET YOU! I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU FEEL THE SAME!" *awkward*, can't they just reply "Yeah, I've noticed that too. Would you like to see if we can last as a steady relationship?" And maybe Person #1 doesn't want that, "Hmm, maybe not now, but I don't want to rule it out in the future." Sounds good, right? And if they are gung-ho about it, "Yeah, I think I'd like that."

Why do we make everything so complicated for ourselves? Sure, once you get into a relationship, it's a whole different ballgame, especially if you stop feeling as attracted to the SO as you were in the beginning. Heartbreaks at the end of a relationship can't be simplified, but I'm not so sure why the initial hook up can't be. No one should be scared of stating how they feel. It's completely natural, and instead of Person #2 getting all weirded out by Person #1's likeness for them, shouldn't they be flattered that someone besides their parents cares for them? Shouldn't it boost Person #2's ego, even if they don't reciprocate the feelings? If it could all be handled like it isn't anything unusual (because it's not), I can't help but feel that everything would be so much easier.
